Meltwater and stormwater contain various types of pollutants, including insoluble products, for example, oil derivatives, as well as sand and street dust particles. If we are talking about refined petroleum products or other potentially dangerous substances, it is worth taking care that they do not harm the ecosystem, because the dumping of such substances is prohibited by the legislation of Ukraine.

In order to bring the indicators of inclusions in wastewater to normal, the company must use special equipment and devices. One of these components is a sand trap for storm sewers. About what it is and what is the principle of operation of the sand catcher — and it will be discussed.

What is a sand trap

"Sand catcher" is called in different ways — "sand trap”, "sand collector", "sand separator", all these terms relate to a single device. The unit is designed to capture suspended particles, sand, and refined petroleum products in wastewater. To put it simply, such a device is a filter that cleans sewer pipes from potentially dangerous and harmful particles in order to prevent them from entering the open environment.

Externally— it is a container with an inlet and outlet for wastewater. Sand traps are made of different materials - composites, plastic, concrete. In addition to caring for the environment, sand traps serve to prevent leaves, branches, and other debris from entering the sewage drains, which provides protection from blockage and significantly increases the efficiency of storm drainage. The sand traps have holes on the side for connection to pipes Ø50, Ø110 and Ø160 mm.

Scope of application

First of all, it is worth noting the need to use sand traps at enterprises where a potentially high degree of pollution of stormwater and wastewater is possible. Such organizations include:

  • Garage cooperatives, parking lots, service stations, gas stations, car washes
  • Production facilities of the chemical, oil refining industry
  • Industrial zones
  • Transport terminals
  • Berths, storage areas
  • Airports
  • Logistics complexes

In addition to use in enterprises with potentially hazardous wastewater, storm water pollution, a sand trap will also not be superfluous in private. Such devices will help to avoid clogging of sewage drains in cottages, other private properties due to the ingress of debris and microparticles into the storm sewer. Naturally, for each specific case, its own type and type of sand catcher is selected.

The principle of operation of the system

The sand trap system is quite simple, but it is no less effective. It assumes the following mechanism of operation:

  1. Polluted water from drains enters the hole of the sand trap.
  2. According to the law of gravity in the tank of the sand catcher, suspended particles fall to the bottom.
  3. Branches, leaves, and other debris are caught by a special filter basket.
  4. Refined products are captured by a filter.
  5. The purified water enters the main sewer system.

It is worth checking and doing scheduled cleaning of the sand catcher at least once a year. If the device is installed in places with increased load, the regularity of cleaning the sand catcher should be increased to 2-4 times a year.

It is also worth remembering that for the efficiency of the sand catcher, it is necessary to install 1 device for every 10 m running.
