Installing handrails for the disabled in the bathroom with your own hands

It is extremely difficult for people with limited mobility — disabled people, people after surgery, women at the end of pregnancy — to lead a normal life and independently provide for their own needs. Fortunately, Ukraine has now adopted laws providing for the layout of buildings taking into account the needs of MGN. However, the buildings of old models, unfortunately, do not differ in their adaptability for the needs of disabled people, first of all — this applies to bathrooms and toilets.

It is extremely important to equip a normal bath and a bathroom, since not only the issue of self — washing and hygiene procedures is solved, but also the psychological aspect is removed when a disabled person feels bad, from the fact that it requires the constant help of outsiders even in such simple processes.

What are the handrails for the bathroom and toilet: types and configuration

Before choosing handrails and other attributes for a bathroom in a house where there are people with disabilities, it is worth considering:

  • where are you planning to install the handrails
  • the degree of mobility of the person requiring care
  • features of the layout of the toilet, bathroom, shower

In houses of old construction, bathrooms are often oversized, and 1-2 handrails are enough, in large rooms 3-4 supports will be needed, depending on the area of the room.

According to the configuration, the handrails are divided into 2 types:

The second option is optimally suited for small-sized baths and toilets, since after use, the handrail can be folded back and save space. When the folding devices are folded — they take up very little space.

Also, handrails can be straight or angular, respectively-left-sided or right-sided. Here the choice depends only on the configuration of the bathroom or bathroom.  The most convenient diameter of the handrails is considered to be a girth of 4-4. 5 cm, they are considered the most convenient so that a disabled person can grasp the structure and the hand does not slip off.

When choosing handrails for the bathroom or toilet, follow the configuration. It should include:

  • Hardware for installation — screws, nuts, screws, anchors, etc.
  • Hinges and bends for mounting crosspieces
  • Handles-resemble a ball, which is conveniently held as an additional support
  • Stubs

How to install handrails in the toilet room

The logic is simple: the holder and support should allow the sedentary patient to get up from the wheelchair, independently transfer to the toilet, and then also transfer from the toilet to the wheelchair without the help of outsiders.

The handrail should be mounted at a height of one meter, in accordance with the configuration of the room-to the right or to the left of the toilet. The distance to which it should be removed from the wall is 6-7 cm. If you bought paired handles, they are mounted behind the toilet bowl so that they pass along the sides at a height of one meter.

If the toilet is installed in the corner, a horizontal type holder is installed on the near wall, on the other side there are racks and railings. It is better to buy stainless steel handrails for the toilet — they are durable, withstand a heavy load and are easy to disinfect with alcohol compounds and household chemicals.

How to install handrails in the bathroom

The installation of handrails depends on how mobile the patient is. If a person can stand independently in the process of washing over the sink, handrails are placed on the sides of the sink. You can complete them with a high chair that unfolds at the right time.

A special folding seat is mounted above the bathroom, on which the disabled person sits during the washing process. Handrails for entering the bathroom are placed on two walls. The railing is placed between the bathroom and the sink, this allows you to save space and hold on to them both during the washing process and when a person moves to take a bath.
